this is a long entry about my days in brunei.. do endure!

1st day 3th jan

it was kinda demoralising hearing horror stories abt brunei.. and i arrived at changi airport wif my morale at a real time low..

the flight took us around 2 hours and i watched "40 year old virgin" on board, through i did not finish watching it as i fell aslp after the delicious meal!

well.. by the time we reached at the brunei airport.. there wasnt any others except for some immigration officers.. the whole pl
ace look deserted and now i finally understand why changi airport is rated among the top few in the world!

anyway.. we took a bus to a nearby camp to take a rest before finally heading to our training area..

brunei looks exactly like malaysia.. with the shophouses and big signboards.. but it is so much cleaner and the roads are well-maintained.. it kinda look more comfortable..

after a little rest at JAC.. we took a fastcraft to our training camp which was an 2 hours ride away... onboard.. my mind was running wild on how the camp would look like.. i was quite worried after horror stories i heard from others...

well.. surprisingly.. the camp look ok.. although it was really old and rundown.. but still i think it is well-equipped..

it was a total change of environment for me and i am really glad that i will only be staying for 10 days or less.. imagine a bunk that holds 80 people! gosh! the whole bunk is really damn small!

but it did not end there.. the planning for certain stuff wasnt done properly.. and in the end it is us cadets suffering! AGAIN!

the food served in the cookhouse was bad! damn bad! and the smell of the washing point was killing mi! worst than the toilet!

it was really a tiring day for mi.. so much travel
ling and admin stuff.. still trying to adapt to the environment!

2nd day 4th jan

went for the pacer and compass course in the morning.. everything is exactly the same as i have done in ocs.. so it was nothing new...

but the later part of the day was something
different.. the "combat swim".. in another word.. river crossing!

the river looks dirty and i was really reluctant to throw myself down the river.. but after some struggle.. i manage to convinc
e myself that i have to go for it! and guess what.. i was enjoying every freaking moment in water! haha! i narly din wanna go up! the water was really cooling and getting myself wet is so fun and familiar! i just love making myself drench!

managed to complete the activity before it started raining.. it was my first experience of rain in brunei.. it was totally different! the lighting was weird and the whole sky was black when it started pouring..

ohh! did i mention? the whole place gets dark at about 6.50pm and unlike singapore.. the whole sky will really be dar
n black!

3rd day 5th jan

had guided navex in the morning.. it is just a simple orientation walk in the brunei jungle guided by a staff sergeant..

had a bad start to the day when we had to cross over a stream at wraist level height at the start of the exercise.. it was r
eally uncomfortable to continue with wet clothings and boots.. but well.. im a soldier! i just have to do wat it takes! haha!

anyway.. it was really demoralising.. but my group was taking the easiest trail.. so it was a kinda consolation... we managed to finish the whole walk in less than 3 hours... experiencing the tall trees and many thorn plants! got cut a couple of times... but im a soldier! i endured! hahaha!

was really glad to be the first group to reach camp.. so we went back to bunk to take a rest and slack till the rest of the groups are back.. during my freetime, i managed to walk outside and take a more d
etailed look at the surrounding.. and then i thought brunei isnt a bad place after all.. the scenery are quite nice.. the clouds are nice.. kinda started loving the country..

anyway.. once the others are back.. we started getting ready for the big one! ya! i mean the 4D3N exercise we are there for!

well.. was glad that im in te same group as cs as it might be different if im going to climb wif someone im not familiar
with.. at least we could lookout for each other..

4th day 6th jan

it was the start of the tedious 4D3N exercise.. mt biang! here we come!

we got the ball rolling at around 0745.. start navigating to our first check point.. it was really tough... the terrain was really different from singapore's... we climbed from knots to knots. down and up countless times before reaching our first check point.. it really din help when we ha
ve to carry fieldbag as heavy as maybe say.. ermm.. 20kg?

after a break at the first check point.. we started navigating to the next check point which was really far away.. well.. it actually read 2km on the map.. but! i think we walked for around 4 hours and ended not even close!

as it was getting real late and the rain is coming down... our instructor suggested that we stop for the day and find ourselves a habouring ground on top of a knot..

the first time using the hammock was quite an experience.. well.. it was more to the bad side.. well.. i guess it was partly because of my drenched uniform.. it din do me good when water start dripping in thru my groundsheet.. being in the middle of a rain in the jungle is the worst u could get.. it couldnt get more worst!

well.. it din stop here.. i was really getting fe
d up with the shelter i had and eventually.. i got up.. started to widen the groundsheet that i had with my bungee cords and comskote.. i was really glad with my work and i slpt really well after that! haha!

5th day 7th jan

got up in the morning and did more ups and downs knots than ever.. we covered an amazing distance compared to the first day and managed to reach the hq on time to catch the bus to mt biang!

the bus dropped us at the opening of a jungle to the base of mt biang.. there is a trail in the jungle.. but even if there is.. the walk was a tiring one.. the trail was cover with wet mud and it look exactly like the teochew yam paste! it was damn gross! but im a soldier! haha!

we managed to find a spot in the muddy jungle and i haboured alongside cs and marcus.. we had great fun cooking rations and talking some nonsense and morale was high becos we were all looking to complete the exercise tml.. which is only the 3rd day..

6th day 8th jan

after a 45 minutes walk.. we reached the river crossing point at the base of mt biang.. it wasnt that bad afterall as the water was only at our wraist level.. we managed to cross in double quick time and proceeded wif the rest of the journey..

climbing up mt biang was really tedious.. the slopes were steep and endless.. when coming real close to the top of mt biang.. a teammate of mine was taking a break.. and then we started shouting at him to get him moving on as it was really close to the top..

he got up.. took one and two steps.. and he fell unconciously to the ground.. my instructor whom at the end was standing behind mi ran up effortlessly.. how amazing can it get...

anyway.. my friend lied unconcious for awhile before opening his eyes.. he was shivering.. his body was hot.. he was in a real bad shape.. at that point.. i was carrying 2 fieldbag.. one was mine and the other was from another teammate whom was also "dying" as in finding it difficult to continue.. so i carried his bag as well.. and the signal set was in his bag..

cs took up the handset and started communicating with the HQ.. everyone was really nervous at the point of time.. mi and cs was manning the comms.. both of us nervous and i was glad we managed to calm down and passed on the msg properly to prevent confusion..

it was great that he managed to recover after abt an hour at the top of mt biang.. we rested there.. ate our lunch and consumed a lot of glucose.. we headed down mt biang with a morale drop as it was getting late and in our hearts we know that we aint going back today.. it was a sour kinda feeling..

the route down was hard with lots of obstacles.. ranging from slippery steep slopes to rocky terrain..

it was always nice to hear my instructor mention that he find the place familiar.. we walked for a few hours before reaching a water collection point..

ohh.. if i forget to mention.. i drank river water for 3 days.. haha! ncie experience.. milk tea to milo.. u name it!

anyway.. the stream we were at was quite clear and i managed to wash up a bit as well.. washed my hair and face.. it was a great feeling!

according to our instructor.. the knot beside the river was the last knot that we have to climb to reach the end point.. climbing up the knot was a great challenge! why? simply becos it was steeper than that of mt biang! it was like a cliff! i swoped field bag with a teammate as his was heavier and he wasnt feeling well.. it was really a test of endurance.. it was the first time in the exercise that i actually kept my mouth shut and carry on climbing.. at many point of times.. i really wanna give up..

at a point of time.. i took a little break and i arrived at the habouring point with a heavier fieldbag and 2 rifles.. it was really a great challenge and im glad i passed it.. we haboured at the knot knowing that it was finally the last night.. but i was down with terrible heat rash and couldnt really enjoyed it..

7th day 9th jan
set off in the morning knowing its time for home.. walked for around an hour and half before reaching the river crossing point.. and found out that there was really no need for us to do the river crossing.. we will be going to the opposite side by assault boats..

kinda disappointed as i was all ready to get wet! but nvm that.. it was a great feeling knowing that the 4 days of exercise havent gone in vain.. we started with a strength of 19 and ended the same.. that was the most importantpart..

got back to camp and the after exercise admin was really troublesome! darn admin! got to visit the camp's canteen for the first time.. whacked myself with a plate of chilli fish rice and fish nd chips.. haha!

8th day 10th jan

slacked the whole day other than some admin stuff such as doing some area cleaning and packing my kit bag..

slpt the whole darn afternoon and it was no doubt, the BEST DAY in BRUNEI! hahaha!

9th day 11th jan

left the camp with a big heart.. today is the last day in brunei.. an it is also our R&R

we visited a couple of mosque, the royal palace, the water village and a couple of shopping malls...

the living standard here is somehow like singapore's.. anyhow.. just some fact:

- brunei is 10 times bigger than singapore
- there is a population of 360,000 people in brunei
- the petrol cost $0.53 per litre
- there is only 1 mcdonalds in brunei
- there are 2 coffee beans in brunei
- the brunei's sultan is 1 of the top ten richest man in the world

well... life here seems quite slow pace and relax.. and during the days here.. i feel quite carefree.. and the thought of having to return to singapore tml actually made mi quite sad.. the fact is.. i dont really wanna return to singapore.. well.. i guess im just trying to escape from the fast pacing and ever growing singapore.. but nevertheless.. i experienced a different kinda culture and experience in brunei..

the training might be tedious.. the food in the cookhouse may sucks.. but it was all a great experience for mi.. good bye brunei~!
